{Letters From Her } Who Are You

Who Are You?

As I look around I see the same people. Same attitudes, same jeans, eyebrows, goals (or lack of I should say), bobbing their heads to the same beat talking about the same stuff.

Whatever happened to originality? Whatever happened to being YOU? Whatever happened to having an idea and aiming to make it manifest?

Did you know that you don’t have to try to be different…you could simply be YOU!?

What has happened to US? Now you might ask who I am talking about when I say “us”… I am talking about my brownskin, my lightskin and chocolate skin individuals. Some can identify being called black, others African American and some… like myself simply being called Americans. The greatest people on earth. The original innovators, the team with endurance like no other. The best adapters yet most self-oppressed individuals.

Granted we all have our own thoughts on racism in America but let’s look at the facts and decisions that we have access to on a daily basis. With sooooooooo much going on in the world today I MUST propose the question… who are YOU??

HAVE YOU BASED WHO YOU ARE ON WHATS BEEN TOLD TO YOU??

Are you tough because you can quote every Lil Wayne song?

Are you “black” because you sag your pants and use slang?

Are you poor because you live in the hood?

Ask yourself… what statistic have I accepted based on what “they” say about you?

I can let you in on a little secret if you’re listening… you are what you answer to! The moment you know who you are and where you came from you’ll never allow anyone to tell you how to feel, what to wear, why you act the way you do, how far to dream, the destiny of your child, why you have an attitude, why you don’t want to work, who freed the slaves, how to wear your hair, why you voted for Obama… and the list goes on and on and on.

Please stop the most common lie, “the white man trying to hold me down” stop allowing the thoughts and opinions of others to sculpt who YOU are. Stop making excusing and take charge of your life.

Do you know what our ancestors had to endure????? Do you know how many lives were stolen away?

OUR ancestors were TAKEN away from their comfort zone. Stolen away from the motherland to fulfill the dream of another man! No, the color of his skin doesn’t matter… the fact is that they were brought to an estranged land… in shackles and without a voice. Ummmm sounds VERY familiar huh?? Take a look at today’s society… WE (an entire generation) are being bound with shackles and silenced YET we are the ones oppressing OURSELVES!!! Sounds foolish doesn’t it? ohhh you don’t believe me? well let me show you a few examples:

We are in chains and shackles. Maybe not visual chains BUT there are weights and restrictions placed on our folks. We are being fed a “reality” that lacks every bit of REAL. Television show stars with some girl’s hair hanging way past her buttocks and a guy that’s only a thug with the video camera is recording. Despite what’s being dished out; the question is… why are you eating and digesting this mess? Lauryn Hill said, “It’s silly when girls sell their soul because it’s in look at where you be in hair weaves like Europeans Fake nails done by Koreans”.

COME AGAIN!

If you’re looking for yourself why would you expect to find it in someone else??? We need to wake up!! We cannot keep asking for 40 acres and a mule we need to find ourselves. Aim higher than the top of the stripper pole and dig deeper than in your pockets to pull out a dime bag. Men and women we HAVE to end this madness… it literally starts with you. Turn off the television & cell phones and interact with your family! Make new traditions instead of playing reality television. Love on your family instead of singing It Aint Nothing to Cut That B%&^# off. It’s so much to say but ill rather show you. We cannot keep carrying the burdens and pain of those that were before us. Learn from their mistakes. Educate yourself and do what’s necessary to be different. Who will be OUR Martin Luther King Jr & Nelson Mandela????  Their dreams do NOT have to remain in the grave. Wake up my people. The oppression is a mental decision and the freedom is a choice away.

I pray that this has encouraged you to discover you.
